World Wheelie Championships 2016 – is on August 20-21st at Elvington Airfield, England…
Thousands of spectators are expected to watch competitors from around the World to attempt to beat the current record.
1. The wheelie must lift (start) before and land (finish) after the measured kilometer.
2. The wheelie must be continuous, as in no front wheel contact with the ground whilst inside the kilometer.
3. S is measured at the end of the kilometer by ground mounted fixed timing equipment, as used by the even marshals.
4. Radar guns are not acceptable as a speed measure.
5. The kilometer length is policed so as to confirm compliance of the continuous wheelie.
6. Trackside marshals will use the word ‘’fail’’ to cancel any incomplete runs.
7. The motorcycle must have no electronic or mechanical ‘’aids’’ that can assist the rider, as in balance devices.
Originally Guinness World Records allowed a wheelie record over a short distance; this resulted in high powered turbo bikes outstripping the ‘average’ rider and so Straightliners defined the distance to be 1Km with the idea that such big bikes would be unruly over a such a distance – and so it’s been for the last 10 years.
The top wheelie riders at the event will be current record holder Gary Rothwell from England who achieved 209mph in 2015. Also present will be Egbert Van Popta from Holland riding a Hayabusa Turbo (195.805mph) and Paddy O’Sullivan from Ireland riding a Suzuki GSXR (189.822mph).
Representing UK will be Dave ‘Dodge’ Rogers, previous World Wheelie Champion, who conceived and is the original driving force behind the World Wheelie Championship.
The World Wheelie Championship is organised by Straightliners and is affiliated to the Auto-Cycle Union (ACU) and the International Organisation of Professional Drivers (IOPD).
Rider participation including record ratification and timing is administered by to UK Timing Association (UKTA).
Both Straightliners and UKTA were set up by renowned motorcycle racer Trevor Duckworth.
