Optimate have now released a solar powered motorcycle battery charger…
Its smart controller converts low current from the 12V solar panel into higher current pulses (4-5 Amps according to strength of sunlight) so that it can effectively desulphate, charge and maintain a motorcycle battery, even in the not-so-sunny UK.
OptiMate Solar combines two important components; a high quality solar panel measuring 53 x 38 x 6 cm (21 x 15 x 2½ inches) and the Optimate smart controller that can be positioned close to the vehicle allowing the user to view the charge and maintenance progress easily.
Designed to be more effective than traditional solar chargers, which only deliver a small current (and on cloudy days can potentially draw power from the battery instead of charging it), OptiMate Solar’s smart controller stores energy, only releasing it when there is sufficient to charge and/or maintain the battery.
OptiMate Solar is completely safe for use with all STD, AGM and GEL 12V batteries from 2–240Ah and won’t overcharge or damage vehicle electronics. The smart controller, solar panel and battery lead are all weatherproof and have been tested to -20°C so are completely safe to use outdoors.
The solar panel has mounting holes to enable easy installation in a convenient location. OptiMate Solar uses Optimate’s renowned SAE-compatible weatherproof “O” connectors and hence can be used with a range of accessories to enable easy connection to any bike.
OptiMate Solar is available at an RRP of £84.99 inc VAT and is covered by a 3-year warranty for complete peace of mind.
