ROX risers review – a simple and affordable way to gain handlebar height to make hand positioning more comfortable…
I bought a Suzuki V-Strom 650 XT a wee while ago and as much I liked it, there were some obvious tweaks to be made.
One of the most obvious was the height of the handlebars, they are just too low for my aging back and long periods of riding were just pulling too hard at my neck so let’s lift those bars up a couple of inches and see what happens…
There are several third party options available but I eventually went for a pair of ROX Speed FX risers for 22mm handlebars that not only gave me a potential extra 2 inches in height, but were also able to tilt back and forth for that fine positioning* a fair whack at £69.99 + postage.
Worth noting here that make sure that you will have a long enough cable length on brakes etc after the bars have risen! You may struggle if you own a F650GS Twin for example…
It also has to be said that they are beautifully made – you can see the precision that has been employed to make them and the high gloss sheen polishing sets them off really nicely.
Next lift the bars off out of the way with the holding clamps and slide in the ROX risers, with the ROX logo on the outside – take the old top clamp and place that back on top of the bar of the riser and lightly tighten.
We’re only lightly tightening since we want that ability to swivel the bars once they are in place – so tight enough to generate some friction to stop it moving all by itself…
Now comes the slightly tricky bit if it’s just one pair of hands available; the bars themselves have to be repositioned in the riser whilst the supplied top clamp is put back in place and the bolt tightened sufficiently to hold the bars up. Not overly difficult to be fair, but another pair of hands for 2 minutes would be nice!
So with the bars up and in place is now time to sit on the bike and decide if the vertical height is too high or too low or whether you want to swivel them towards or away from you. The beauty of these ROX risers is that you have that choice – it’s not just a simple matter of making the bars higher.
It’s at this point that you will need to check and double check that control cables are not being overly stretched in your chosen position. Taut is one thing – stretched is dangerous for several reasons.
However, I did struggle to get a hex key underneath the newly raised bars to tighten the bolts. It was quite a frustrating affair, and in that frustration I ended up grinding down a hex key to fit… a pointless exercise it turned out… the reality is that the ‘back’ bolts (the one nearest you when you sit on the bike) screw down to about 75% to start with; when you finally tighten – you are just left with the ‘front’ bolts to screw down. Silly me. Live and learn!

Overall then a simple exercise that makes all the difference to riding for long periods. Having ridden for 14 hours straight from Switzerland to the UK in a ‘wonderful’ day I can happily solved the arms getting tired and neck hurting scenario.
